Purana Mandir Full Movies Picture
Synopsis
Suman lives a wealthy lifestyle along with her widower dad, Thakur Ranvir Singh, and an unmarried aunt, Damyanti, in a palatial house in Bombay. They are direct descendants of Raja Hariman Singh of Bijapur. When Ranvir finds out that Suman is in love with a middle-classed male, Sanjay, he expresses displeasure and forbids her to ever see him again. When she persists, he tells her that there is a curse on the entire family - a curse that was inflicted 200 years ago by a blood-thirsty, flesh-eating demon named Samri.

The smash horror hit for the Ramsay brothers, bringing life to the genre in Bollywood. It would spawn several imitations and replications, and it's easy to see why. The plot is packed with larger than life characters, and heroic good versus evil antics, the sets and locations are gorgeous, and the score (which would be reused in future films) is gripping and exciting. As one would expect, there are a few musical numbers, which I'd say I'm 50/50 on. A couple of the love songs are really nice, though some of the interludes really feel like padding that…

Halloween 2019 — 13/31
I spent the first half hour of Purana Mandir trying to figure out whether I'd watched it before. (Man, how did I ever survive without Letterboxd?!) Once the upsetting scene where a mother turns into a demon-like corpse directly after birthing a child, I realised I hadn't seen this because I definitely would have remembered that!
Purana Mandir is quality Bollywood horror. No surprises considering the Ramsay Brothers are at at the helm. It's surprisingly vicious with heads being lopped off and hypnotised eyes bleeding like something out of City of the Living Dead. It's also, despite some fully clothed shower scenes, oddly sex heavy for an Indian film with zoom-ins on swimsuited boobs and references…

Has potential to be a cheesy horror movie, but the whole thing is ruined by unnecessary parodies.

Trapped somewhere in this mess there is a mildly competent '80s horror film. Too bad it's muddied up with a stupid parody side plot and other unnecessary nonsense. Reminded me stylistically of The Evil Dead, and the plot is reminiscent of Black Sunday. Watch those instead.

I'm a sucker for Indian horror and I've liked other Ramsay brother movies (Bandh Darwaza man), but this was on a different level of being laughable. Everything from the acting to the sets to the dancing is half-assed, and the plot routinely wanders off into an unrelated Sholay homage (or parody?).
The Bollywood tropes can work fine with horror (Raaz), but here the musical numbers come out of nowhere and laughably break up the action. Plus they're just bad, which adds to the unintentional hilarity of the affair.

Catching up on my Ramsays
-
For Westerners, Indian horror pretty much begins and ends with the Ramsay brothers' '80s output, and Purana Mandir is ground zero. It was their first big hit at home, establishing their winning formula for adapting classic horror tropes to the tastes of Indian audiences. In this case, you've got a fairly standard gothic horror setup: evildoer lays down pre-credits curse, young descendant journeys to secret-shrouded family abode, she's drawn to an ominous painting, superstitious locals won't talk, etc. On the horror front, the differences are almost entirely cultural, such as the malicious demon Saamri (Ajay Agarwal) being kept at bay with Shiva's golden trishula instead of a crucifix. It's otherwise so predictable and old-fashioned that there's nothing frightening for a…

Important Cinema Club Super Scary Movie Challenge (29/31)
#05 - A Horror Film Directed by the Ramsay BrothersOne of just a few Indian horror movies I've seen and the first to go pedal to the metal in offering the blend of genres and tones that Western audiences associate with the country and its film industries. An unbelievable amount of fun, with jump scares, catchy tunes, monster makeup, and a Scooby-Doo-ass portrait that can see. Bloated runtimes and tonal inconsistency have become the hallmarks of blockbuster filmmaking in the US. Our directors could learn a thing or two from the Ramsays! They make both look good!

This was my first foray into Bollywood horror cinema, and it was wild! I'm still trying to mentally digest everything I just watched, because, in true Bollywood tradition, this film has a bit of EVERYTHING in it. Occult and supernatural monsters, brutal violence with great sfx, bizarre song & dance numbers that come out of nowhere (often at the most seemingly inappropriate moments), some really unfortunate attempts at comedy, and soap opera style romance. I really enjoyed this quite a bit, and I definitely look forward to exploring more of this particular branch of insane film history.

Made by the famous Ramsay brothers, this batshit crazy horror/comedy/romance/musical hybrid begins with the origin story of an ancient curse placed on a royal family by a demon. The curse prohibits any of the family's female heirs from marrying lest they die in childbirth. The film then flashes forward to the present where a recently-engaged female descendant travels with her fiance and another couple to the old temple where the demon, Samri, is buried, in an attempt to break the curse. This ridiculous concoction mixes low-comedy with big scares (Samri's make-up is genuinely creepy), and features, yes, many musical numbers besides. Think of a Bollywood version of The Evil Dead and you'll have some idea of what the Ramsay brothers…

Ridley's Halloween Horror Movie Marathon 2020: The One that Goes All the Way!
Week One: A Trip through Bollywood Horror, with the Help of the Ramsay Brothers, Day 3 (Sept 29)The Ramsay Brothers hit it real big with this one, often considered the big turning point for horror in Bollywood cinema and a massive box office success, which led to the Ramsays establishing a formula that I'm sure to see more of this week while inspiring plenty of imitators that saw gold in doing something a lot scarier than the normal theater fare. Even the expected comedy subplot does little to dissuade the film from following a much stronger horror vibe from start to finish, establishing its threat early…

Goes from demon hunting to Sholay spoof then to jungle adventure then back to demon hunting, with songs, kung fu and a hairy demon. Better tban any A24 movie.
