How to Take a Compass Reading Feng Shui

If you're confused by feng shui and about how to assign the corners of your home, you'll be happy to know that there is a secret weapon in the feng shui arsenal: the compass.

Some feng shui experts recommend locating all the sectors of your home by orienting off the door to the room, or the direction of the house by assigning the front as north.

This can often be confusing because there may be more than one entryway to a room, and what if your front door actually faces west or southeast?

In traditional Chinese feng shui, all home and office locations are determined by their actual directions, not the assigned direction of north. Using actual directions rather than just the opening to a room helps tap into the earth's own energy or "chi."

A compass helps you tune in to the earth's energy

By using true compass directions, you enhance your reception of the energy from that direction, such as career help from the north.

And how does that help you? Well, if a home or business, like a satellite dish, is oriented correctly, the "television picture" of our life comes in clear and crisp, making for faster and better feng shui results.

This means you need to know exactly where your feng shui corners are (this is a guide of all the corners and a FREE download). Most of the time you might guess about where the corners are, and then you may wonder why your feng shui isn't working like you want it to.

Feng shui masters often use a compass called a luo pan, but for most people, a standard $10 camping compass will do the job.

Each direction offers benefits such as health, wealth, and romance

But in order to tap into all their benefits, you need to know exactly where your home's corners are. This takes a little work, but once you know it and have it down on paper, so many things will become apparent.

Many times you think a bathroom is in your health direction and it turns out to be in your wealth sector.

That's why it's so important to be accurate and get your floor plan down on paper. Start with a to-scale drawing of your floor plan. Once you have that, you're ready to go.

Use the following steps below to help you get your home diagrammed with the corners assigned.

FINDING YOUR HOME'S CORNERS…

STEP 1. Divide your home into 9 equal squares.

To make the easiest determinations for these locations in your home, you should first divide your house or office into 9 equal squares, or sectors (see Figure 1 below). This is called the "Magic Lo Shu Square" and it unlocks the feng shui in any space.

Look at the examples below of some traditional home shapes and how the lo shu square is laid over their floor plans.

Figure 1. Center door. Take reading from front door, and assign it to the front middle square.

Figure 2. L-shaped house with lo shu square and center sector front door. Label the door as center sector, and the front center square according to the door direction, i.e, west, northeast, etc.

Figure 3. Off-center door. Take reading from door and then assign that direction to front middle square.

What do I do if my door doesn't face the street?

What do I do if I live in an apartment?

You can take a reading from the center of the apartment to determine the sectors. Or, if you have a large picture window with a wide view, take a reading from there and then assign your corners.

STEP 2:  Read the Compass

Reading the compass properly is critical for determining the correct directions of your home. Bear in mind that metal from doors, lamps, etc., can affect the reading of the compass, and that's okay.

What's important is that what you are measuring is not the true direction – we know what those are. What you're measuring is how those directions come into YOUR house. What is being measured are the directions as they appear for this particular location.

To accurately take directions, always use a magnetic compass and avoid assessing directions based on where the sun rises and sets. To take directions, be sure to stand in the center of front door with a compass held at waist level.

If there is a bubble level on the compass, make sure it is centered so that the needle will float properly. Now, you can assess the correct directions.

Be aware that if you have metal, such as jewelry or a belt it will distort the reading of your compass. Try to use a magnetic compass because smartphones aren't always accurate.

STEP 3. Determine the direction that your front door faces.

Once you have the degree, you'll need to assign the direction of your home. This is your facing direction. Use this table below to find your exact facing direction based on your compass reading.

If your faces east, for instance, then the sector the door is in is east, provided the door actually is in the center. Next, label each additional sector according to its direction, north, southwest, northwest, east, etc. The last, or ninth sector, is the center sector.

Because most houses and buildings are irregularly shaped and are rarely perfect boxes, there may be some sectors that are missing.  This is almost always the case with L-shaped houses.

These missing sectors also give a clue to what areas of life are being impacted. For example, in an L-shaped house, there are probably one or more sectors missing. Perhaps, it is the north. If this is the case, then chances are the residents are lacking opportunities and career advancement.

STEP 4:  Assign your sectors.

Next, once you know the direction your home is facing, assign all the directions based on the center front sector like the example below.

Figure 4. Lo shu square applied to a southwest-facing house and all the sectors assigned.

As you can see in Figure 4, the house is a southwest-facing home. The door is in the center as well, and the front middle sector is labeled as southwest. From there, going in a clockwise direction, you assign the other sectors. It's not hard to do, so don't let a compass intimidate you!

Using a compass you will be able to accurately determine the feng shui of any space.

Because you will be confident that your house is divided up and the corners are marked correctly and accurately, you'll learn where your wealth, fame, or relationship sectors are exactly and you will be able to capitalize on that by creating a harmonious, supportive, and successful environment.
